COLLEGE ADMISSIONS POINTERS

Applying for College

Application:

  • All applications are on-line. Go to the University websites, or to the  Common Application, https://www.commonapp.org/.
  • Include EVERYTHING about you (resume) aside from transcript data.
  • Pay application fee. 
  • Essays (include something extra about yourself).
  • Tell them how much you want to attend their school.
  • Letters of recommendation (ask teachers NOW). Fill out Brag Sheet available on this page.
  • Financial Aid – make sure you apply online  https://fafsa.gov/ (starting October 1st).
  • For private schools, complete the CSS Profile  at https://student.collegeboard.org/css-financial-aid-profile.  This completed application is for nonfederal financial aid from almost 300 colleges.
  • Get organized now….most of the applications should be completed over the summer after Junior year.
  • Remember the schools are making decisions based on your academics through Junior year, first semester of Senior year, and the rigor of your Senior classes. 

Transcripts:

  • Submit application online then send your transcript.
  • Also get transcripts for scholarship applications.
  • Senior year classes & grades MATTER! Don't slack off!
  • Make sure you satisfy the curriculum requirements for the colleges or universities you are planning to attend.

SAT/ACT (take with writing for 4 year schools):

Extracurricular Activities:

  • Make sure you include everything you were involved in since the summer following 8th grade.
  • Be clear and concise – list title of organization or activity, and your specific role.
  • Don’t forget to include things you did in your community, church, temple, scouts, clubs, etc.

Leadership:

  • Colleges must be provided with and are interested in seeing your leadership positions, so include them!
  • Be accurate, don’t say something that you may not have done, you never know when they are going to check.
